Lighting is the fastest way to change how a room feels and the most jargon-heavy corner of interior design. Designers layer three kinds of light in every room: ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. The fixtures that do the work are pendant lights, sconces, recessed lighting, and the occasional picture light. Knowing what each one is for is the difference between a room that reads expensive and one that reads flat.
